E43: The power of small

Feeling helpless?

Are you feeling like your ideas may not have any impact in a fight that has dominated the global mind and affected health, society and commerce in every country on earth?

The Covid-19 pandemic has showcased how the smallest among us can have the biggest impact.

The corona virus itself is an organism smaller than a bacteria – yet it has stopped the entire world of 7.5 billion people dead in its tracks. It has shuttered businesses and brought industry and giant economies to a screeching halt.

It has also, inadvertently, shown us the power of small.

When the history books record this event they may title it

‘For want of a lowly face mask…’.

The health care systems across the world are struggling for protection as governments, the supply chain and the hoarders drive down the supply and drive up the price.

The accessibility and availability of face masks and other PPE could be as much of a deciding factor in this fight, as the availability of the much more complex and expensive ventilators.

CanGapAssociation challenge

I participated in a challenge for the Canadian Gap Year Association today. Their Instagram handle is @cangapassociation

I chose to ask the participants to contemplate the power of small – to think back to moments in history where the smallest viable part of the chain made a significant impact.

From Dunkirk to Columbia

Some of them were major game changers. Like the use of the flotilla of small boats that rescued the British Army at Dunkirk during the second world war.

Others, like the failure of the little o-ring on the Space Shuttle Columbia will be remembered for the disasters that could have been prevented.

Nothing is insignificant or unimportant

Regardless, what these events show us is that there is no idea too insignificant, or piece of equipment too small or invaluable. Just as our health care system is currently so dependent on the support staff, we see that we are all necessary parts in bigger puzzle.

On that note, no idea is without merit. It may the game changer by itself. Or it can be the idea that launches 100 other greater ideas.

It is important to value ourselves in the this process, and speak up if we have any suggestions – whether they be ideas on social distancing, covid-19 vaccine, climate catastrophe or how to jump start the economy.

Because the best idea can come from anyone, anywhere, at any time

The world is in need of bold ideas. So speak up.
