Could a previous employer or manager be the answer to your job quest?

Creative job hunting means becoming inventive in your ideas. This video explores positioning yourself to be aware of, and taking advantage of opportunities that may arise.
Start looking around for patterns, because the job market is very much alive and fluid.

Today’s tip comes from noticing an increasing number of LinkedIn contacts announcing their return to previous employers.

What is the advantage of returning to a previous employer?

  • They know you – You are a proven quantity. They know the quality of your work, your reliability and productivity
  • You know them – You understand the company, understand the hierarchy. This reduces the burden on HR & your team for the onboarding process (the first few weeks at work where you get oriented)
  • You already have a good relationship through the organization, and probably have already established some great contacts

Trusted & proven talent

But most importantly, they are probably in need of trusted & proven talent as they formulate their response to the COVID crisis.

If you are in need of work (full time or summer) consider reaching back to a past employer.
Be prepared for a ‘No’. But you might get surprised!

Bottom line – work on your networking, and reach out to previous employers and managers who know your work ethic

This job market is not dead. Opportunities exist for those who are positioned to look for them.

For anyone who’s job hunting right now in the middle of this COVID crisis, we’re looking for ways to be creative and get more job opportunities.

Think creatively in your hunt

We’ve discussed this before – bringing this element of creativity.

Well, something interesting has been happening on my LinkedIn feed. I have noticed not one, not two, but quite a few people returning to previous employers.

Now this brings up a great opportunity.

Do you have proven employment capital with a previous employer?

  • Do you have an employer who you enjoyed working with?
  • It could be a summer job.
  • It could be a full time position from a couple of years back.

But think back to positions where you parted on great terms.

But more than that you:

  • enjoyed the people,
  • enjoyed working with the company,
  • bought into their mission.

It’s worthwhile picking up the phone and approaching them.

Because many organizations at this moment are looking for talent.

And if they have prior employees who:

  • they can rely on
  • understand how things work
  • understand the systems

it makes onboarding a lot easier.

And in this moment where everybody’s working from home, it can make that transition and that experience so much more powerful.

Call to Action – Contact previous employers to see if they are hiring

So consider approaching a previous employer. They may be in the middle of needing more people on board.
