On a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam

In the greater scheme of the galaxy, that Earth is – a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

Look at that dot

The quote by Carl Sagan, the astronomer, gives context to our place on Earth in time and space:

Look again at that dot.
That’s here, that’s home, that’s us.
On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of,
every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.

The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines,
every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant,
every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child,
inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician,
every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner
in the history of our species lived there

—on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

It is humbling to recognize that dimension of time and history.

Awareness and Action

It was a good day. As I went about my work and interactions, I had the opportunity to discuss the daily podcast with so many people. Raising awareness is a big part of my intent with this podcast.

And then offering empowerment for each of us to do our bite-size action for the day.

I see engagement and wonderful ideas, big and small that come from everywhere.

I heard about a local lady who collects all the disposable coffee cups from her party when they go out for a coffee, and recycles them responsibly at home, rather than risk the cross contamination in the coffee store.

Little actions. Daily.

So I continue daily:

  1. Making at least one climate-related decision or action, daily.
  2. Discovering something new about the urgency – via blogs, conversations, new technology.
  3. Sharing the urgency with people around me.
  4. Actively discussing creative solutions.  Because the best idea can come from anyone, anywhere.

Thank you for the wonderful feedback to yesterday’s post. It seems that many of us resonated with that quote, and found it a useful reframe. There is much to be done. And each of us can start somewhere.

Today’s podcast episode:

The aim is to raise enough awareness that we sense the urgency of the situation and begin to take daily actions.

Thank you for joining me on this journey
