Habits Become Easier If You Are Blessed With These: 5 Reasons I Am Grateful for 3-6-5 days of Writing

Feeling grateful and blessed! I am on a 365-day writing streak.

I’ve been chasing the habit of regular writing for the past five years. And now that I have made it this far, I would like to share some of the reasons it may have worked to date. Is there a secret sauce? Are you are searching for one? Then try out some of the ideas making my current streak possible.

This post is part of the 3-6-5 series:

5 things I am grateful for:

  1. Daily Writing and accountability companions for making me feel seen and who inspire me to carry on.
  2. Everyone who has purchased a copy of this book. Thanks for sending the photos of the book in its new home, whether in physical or kindle form.
  3. Inspiration – and the generosity of others to share what makes writing easier for them.
  4. Those who want to #alwaysbelearning, read my daily work or study alongside me.
  5. That I have good material to start with. I am blessed with a wonderful family and a spouse who dances on the edge of the impossible.
I am blessed.

365 days did not happen by accident. It took a lot of support. I write alongside good people. We may have started off as strangers, But now we are friends. Because we share more about ourselves with each other, it makes our writing more robust. Writing partners help bring our life journey into the books we are writing.

I learned that I can give myself a pass about posting on LinkedIn – if the message that day feels more personal than professional. But that I should write daily and stay accountable to someone – and these folk are my posse.

It gives me incredible support to know that I am not yelling into a void. The reactions to the video of me unboxing my books on LinkedIn showed me that more people are watching my progress from the sidelines than I knew! I was overwhelmed by the show of support.

I am also learning to support others – with an “I see you”. A simple 💓 or 👍🏽 suffices when I do not have the time to add an actual comment.

These simple interactions matter. The shape of work is changing. We will need to create the emotional feedback loops that we would have received in person – through nods of encouragement or a “Hey man, good presentation” as we bump into each other in the elevator.

I am blessed.

People have bought my book! Some have bought multiple copies. Many have shared photos – selfies with the book, the book sharing space on a bookshelf, on a familiar kitchen table. I adore these acknowledgements that a book about travelling is making its way around the globe! Many have reached back to tell me the impact of a particular chapter or phrase. Your collective support has been amazing. And it is a reminder for each of us to share out loud occasionally.

I am blessed.

There are people all over this world who are figuring out their secret sauce and are willing to share their experiences with me.

I collect ideas to help with the technique of writing from a variety of sources. My current favourites are Dr. Nichol Janz of the Write Habit and David Perell of Write of Passage. I am a mathematician who is still working really hard at communicating simply.

I am blessed.

I am surrounded by people hungry to learn. We are growing – together. When we hear of a resource that can help someone else, we share it. We learn from each other’s posts. And we open our networks to like-minded individuals.

I am blessed.

I have great material to use in my writing. I can dredge my world experiences for so much content – professional and personal. And I have a wonderful and supportive family.

And in a world of big “I” Impossible, I am blessed with a spouse who constantly stares challenge in the face and asks “Why not?”

What do you need to surround yourself with to create your own habit?

Make. Take. Talk.

Make: a note. What are the circumstances when you find it easier to stick with your habit? Is it the time of day? Is it rest?
Take: Yes. Take help when it is offered. It is both an act of humility and generosity. And it creates community.
Talk: Sharing our blessings is a great way to create a positive environment.

Because it is a wonderful experience to move your streak into a habit.
