3 discoveries from homeschooling my kids

In 2004-2005 we un-schooled our children as we traveled across the world.

It was eye-opening:

  1. They learned to set their own schedule and understand deliverables.
  2. Each had their own learning style. One is a peer learner – and thrives in a live classroom setting. Another is an avid planner.
  3. You can get much of the formal learning done in 2 hours a day. But you can get real learning when you are bored and therefore curious.

They learned self-confidence, self-reliance, pacing. They watched for the environment that best suited their learning styles when searching for postsecondary education. They learned how to network and create communities for support.

It was not easy and gave me a new way of understanding how to navigate and augment the education system for my children. I could not do it again! But the experience taught our family much.

I hope you will have that same opportunity for discovery in these weeks of COVID-19 lockdown. The greatest gift you can give your children in these uncertain times is a few uninterrupted and focused hours with you.

Make memories: share a show, play a game, cook together, or just eat ice-cream.

If I can offer you any advice, please do not hesitate to reach out.
