The Wonder of Boys by Michael Gurian

I no longer have my copy of ‘The Wonder of Boys’ by Michael Gurian. It has been passed around from family to friend, neighbour to neighbour. It is no longer on my bedside table, but the wisdom and wise words have helped many a parent and many a child.

Running Hot or Cold

It mentions a repeated interaction between a mother and her teen son. She noticed that the same phrase “How was your day?” could be met with a challenging “Why do you want to know?” one day, and with a hug and chatty conversation the next. Our teens are discovering and establishing their own identities and cleaving and clinging in that internal conversation.

Meet them where they are

Game changer for me as a parent. I learned to be available and meet them where they are on that day. I hoped to develop their self-confidence by allowing them to explore; allowing them to have different feelings on different days.

This is another in the series of parenting tips for classof2030, where we share the resources that made a difference in our journey, and the new resources that could help a young student prepare for the futureofwork.

Do you want to join the discussion? When have your parenting journeys taken a twist? What advice would you offer a new parent?
